Personal:

I go to TCU and am a member of the TriFrogs team here. I just started training for triathlons in August 2010. I ran track throughout high school, but always hated long distance until this summer. Something inside me snapped and I found out that I love it! Unfortunately, I got a stress fracture due to overtraining for a half marathon I was aiming to do in December, but I should be back on my feet soon! In the meantime, I've significantly improved in the biking and swimming! Stay tuned to watch me grow!

This was a brick workout. I swam 100 yds for a warmup, did a 1400 yds until 5 minutes before cycling class, jumped out of the pool and practiced transitioning. In cycling we started with a cardio lung/leg workout and were on the bikes alternating climbing and sprinting with short rests between. Overall the swim took about 26 minutes, the cardio lasted 15 minutes, and the bike lasted 45 minutes.

This was my weights/ running day. Although since my orthotics still haven't come in it had to be elliptical. I only did 4 miles because I was short for time and my legs were really tired for some reason. I couldn't keep my normal cadence up on the machine. I ended up with 4 miles at a 6:41ppm with an overall total of 26:44. Lame.

I went down to the weight room after that for an hour and did my normal routine. I felt better after weights, so maybe I was just sore.

This was my second major distance swim. I swim miles all the time doing intervals, but for triathlons and such you have to have the endurance and I hadn't tested that out very much. I'm pretty pleased with the result. The time is nothing beautiful, but the fact that I finished without even being out of breath tells me that come race day (or another time trial) I can push a lot harder. I'm impressed with how much I've improved since I started and could barely swim 200 without dying. I think it has a lot to do with finding your stroke rhythm and learning when to breath. I'm finally getting comfortable in the water!

Haha, sorry! Free just means normal swimming, like free stroke. Pulls are when you use a little foam thing that you hold between your legs to keep your but up, but you don't kick. It's just your arms pulling your weight across the pool. Kicks are the opposite. No arms, use a board, and focus on leg power. :)

I did the elliptical again today. I wanted to test my speed and see if I could improve from yesterday. Usually I do ellipticals Tuesday/Thursday and the second day I'm significantly slower. I wanted to find out if it was just a mental thing. It usually is. I did 6 miles and ended up averaging a 5:39 pace. Finished in 34:05. Again, I'm not sure how ellipticals translate in running terms, but I was pleased with this big improvement, especially after another PR the day before.

So I did a triple workout today, probably not a great idea because none of them were at max. effort. But now that I'm running again, my runs can only happen every other day and I don't want to skip those, plus MWF is usually my swim/cycle day.

So, I swam in the morning, ran in the afternoon, and went to spin class in the evening. True triathlete style. During my swim, I did have a friend helping me with form so while it wasn't a sprint or distant workout, it was still very productive.

1.5 miles at a 9:14 ppm in 13:51. I ran with my roommate who like to keep around a 10 minute pace. It was good because I helped push her a little harder for the 5k she's training for and she slowed me down since I'm so prone to just let loose and go!

I had cycling class tonight too. We spun for about 45 minutes and then did plyo's. By the end of it I was completely dead. My legs aren't uses to so many different muscles being used in one day! But hey, that's why collegiate nationals isn't until April, right?

Do you know if you have the right shoes for your feet?

The reason I ask is because I used to get shin splints when I was in HS all the time. I found out that I have high arches and needed extra cushioned neutral shoes with good arch support. I haven't gotten shin splints since.

When I started running again a couple years ago, I got plantar faciatis... which was again atributed to my high arches. I had some arch support inserts made and the pain went away.

I think shoes made such a difference! I have even found that when my knees or IT band hurts, I buy new shoes and the pain goes away.

From ChrisM on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 at 15:34:46 from 86.27.11.169

You can try strengthening the muscles in your shin by repeatedly moving your foot 'up' towards your shin and back to the floor and repeat, say in bursts of one minute over the course of a day, you will need to do it quite fast but it can be done sitting at a desk

Yeah...You got into the Collegiate Tri Meet...!!! Now to stay injury free and slowly work up to the big day.

I wanted to pass this information to you.

Texas Lindsey wrote: "I love the Trinity Trails- there's like 30 miles of trails. I always run the trails on Saturdays with the Fort Worth Running Company store located on 7th street. They put water and nuun out for us every 2 miles. They also have track workouts at the TCU track (which I can never make because of my babies). If your daughter is ever looking for a group to join or shoes to buy, I recommend them! It's a father/son owned store and they are really wonderful people. They are personally interested in everyone's specific goals and have great advice... the group just feels like a family. Joining that group was one of the best things I have ever done!!"

Hi - I'm training for a tri too, my first. I'll probably peak in on your training, just to see what you are doing. My 5K goal is the same as yours, and my tri goal is to survive the swim.
